This week, we dove into our curiosity! I am so excited about our school-wide focus on this important character trait this month. It really is the magic ingredient required for life-long learners who have a positive, growth-mindset attitude about their learning. Luckily, my young learners come to school every morning brimming with curiosity and passion about the world around them. We made a list of things we are curious about...
... and then created these masterpieces!
Next week, I will begin teaching the students how to use comprehension strategies to read and learn as they encounter information and ideas
in non-fiction texts. These non-fiction reading strategies are designed to create life-long learners who read actively and independently across
the curriculum, who engage their minds and who understand what they read.

Continuing to Create!
We also used our curiosity to continue to create. On Friday, we got some inspiration from Hazel's dad, David, who builds Boeing 787s! With help from Hazel and her older sister, Abigail, he told us about all of the collaborative work that goes into making these amazing flying machines. He also showed us a great video to help us understand. We were also inspired by our 4th grade neighbors when we had a chance to walk through their Genius Hour Gallery! We were wowed by how these big kids were able to turn their ideas into real things. It made me excited to think about what dreams my kindergarteners will be able to make come alive when they are in 4th grade!!

We used this inspiration during our Idea Workshop on Friday. Some kids worked on growing ideas they had started last week. Others decided to work with Olivia and her dad, Will, on a new idea they have been playing with ~ making a "Peace Place" structure for our calm body spot. A group of us wanted to follow our excitement about building airplanes that Hazel's dad's presentation inspired, so we made paper airplanes together with the help of a YouTube tutorial video. It was challenging work, but worth the effort when we test flew our planes in the hallway!
